Collecting Sweet Chestnuts

A sunny October morning made for a perfect opportunity to collect sweet chestnuts in the local wood. There were plenty of kernels lying around together with some shrivelled nuts so it seemed that the squirrels had got the first and best pick. There were strong southerly winds and we soon came across some that hadn’t been eaten and to avoid pricking our fingers rolled them under foot until they released their treasure. We filled our pockets and cooked them on the fire later.
